Steve Griffiths

Musical Director

Steve Griffiths was born in South Wales and studied Music and Education at Warwick University. He subsequently taught music and directed choirs in Coventry, Suffolk and Essex before taking up the post of Director of Music at Dubai College in the UAE. He has since taught and directed concerts, choirs and musicals in Qatar, Syria, China and South Korea. His most recent post was as Director of Performing Arts at Wellington College International, Tianjin, China. Now a freelance musician based in Saffron Walden, he works as an accompanist and teaches piano. In addition to directing The New Thaxted Singers he spends much of his time composing.

Maggi Griffiths

Choir Manager and assistant MD

Maggi Griffiths studied Music and Education at Coventry College of Education/Warwick University. She has taught extensively in the UK and overseas both as a Music Specialist as well as a general class teacher. Her first love is singing, and she also plays the piano and recorder. She has sung in many choral and operatic societies and enjoys directing school choirs as well as teaching one to one singing.
Maggi taught Music at Thaxted Primary School for fifteen years before retiring in 2020. During that time, she directed many concerts both in school and in the wider community.
Maggi currently sings with the Saffron Walden Choral Society as well as managing and co-directing Thaxted Singers.

Sue Hickman

Accompanist

Sue Hickman is a freelance musician and accompanist, having studied at the Royal College of Music. She studied piano performance with Steven Savage and the late Sydney Harrison, and cello with Anthony Pini. After gaining a singing diploma, she added teaching choirs to her skills, and now works regularly as an accompanist. Sue currently directs the Bishops Stortford U3A singers and has taught music both in and out of the classroom for forty years. She plays in lunchtime concerts with the violinist Philippa Hanson, and is an examiner for Trinity College, London. Sue has also written and produced a C.D. of children’s worship songs, and more recently, a C.D. album of piano music to raise funds for Gastric Cancer Research.
